Tour overview

This is a day of three very different stories. On this private Rock of Cashel tour, we head north from Cork to the hilltop where the kings of Munster once ruled, come back to Cobh, the Titanic’s last port of call and the harbour so many Irish emigrants sailed from, and finish with a whiskey at Jameson Distillery Midleton. Cobh and Midleton are both close to the cruise port, so it works especially well as a private Cobh shore excursion too.

What you will see on the Rock of Cashel tour

1

The Rock of Cashel

A little over an hour north of Cork, you’ll see the Rock of Cashel long before you reach it, rising out of the flat Tipperary plain on its limestone outcrop. This was the seat of the kings of Munster before it was handed to the church, and today a round tower, a Romanesque chapel and a roofless cathedral stand together on the summit. Walk the walls, look out over the plain, and it’s easy to see why kings wanted to rule from here.

2

Cobh

Back down on Cork Harbour, Cobh climbs steeply from the water in rows of painted houses, with St Colman’s Cathedral high above and the terrace locals call the Deck of Cards just below. In 1912 this was the Titanic’s last port of call, and for generations it was the last piece of Ireland millions of emigrants saw as they left for America. If your own family’s story began here, it may be the most personal stop of your day.

3

Jameson Distillery Midleton

We finish a short drive east of Cork at the old Midleton Distillery, where Jameson tells its story. A guided tour takes you through the historic buildings and warehouses, past the world’s largest pot still standing outside, and ends with a tasting. After a day of kings and emigrant ships, it’s a relaxed way to raise a glass.

A private day of history and whiskey, at your pace

We’ll collect you from your hotel or address in Cork, or from the ship at Cobh, and have you back at the end of the day. This is one of our private day tours from Cork, so the pace is yours, whether that means an extra half hour on the Rock or a slower lunch before Midleton. Your driver-guide brings the stories to life as you go, from the kings of Munster to the emigrant ships.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The Rock of Cashel is one of the most striking historic sites in Ireland, and it rewards the drive. It stands on a limestone outcrop above the Tipperary plain, and it was the seat of the kings of Munster for centuries before it was handed to the church. What survives is a remarkable group of buildings on one hilltop: a round tower, a Romanesque chapel with carved stonework, and the ruins of a great cathedral. It is the setting as much as the buildings that stays with you, the way the Rock rises from the plain and the views that open out from the walls. Your driver-guide will tell you the history as you approach, so you arrive knowing what you are looking at. The site is managed by the Office of Public Works, and entry is paid separately on the day. Allow time to walk around at your own pace, and bring a layer, because it can be windy on top.

Yes, and it is one of the best fits. Any of our day tours can be arranged as a private shore excursion from Cobh, but this route is especially well suited because two of the three stops, Cobh itself and Jameson Distillery Midleton, are close to the port. That means we can plan the day so that the longest drive, north to the Rock of Cashel, comes first, and the day finishes near the ship. If your ship docks at Cobh, you may already be in town, so we can shorten the Cobh stop or use it for a specific visit you want, such as the Titanic story or the cathedral. When you enquire, send us your ship’s name, your arrival time and your all-aboard time, and we will build the day around them. If you would prefer to stay closer to the port, our Cork City, Kinsale & Jameson tour is another easy shore-excursion day.

The old Midleton Distillery, a short drive east of Cork city, is where Jameson tells its story. Visitors are taken on a guided tour through the historic distillery buildings, including the warehouses where whiskey is aged, and learn how Irish whiskey is made and how Jameson’s story unfolded here. You will also see the enormous old pot still outside, which is the largest in the world. The tour finishes with a guided tasting, and the distillery offers other experiences if you want something more in-depth. The exact tour format and times are set by the distillery and can change, and entry is paid separately, so tell us when you enquire if the distillery is a priority and we will plan the day around the tour times. Anyone in your group who does not drink whiskey can still enjoy the tour and the history. Your driver-guide is doing the driving, of course, so you can relax and enjoy the tasting.

The Rock of Cashel is in County Tipperary, a little over an hour north of Cork on the motorway, which makes it one of the easier heritage sites to reach from the city. On this tour it is the longest drive of the day, so we usually plan it first, while everyone is fresh and while you have the most time, and then head back south to Cobh and Midleton, which sit close to Cork and to the cruise port. The drive itself is comfortable in a Mercedes sized to your group, and it is a good chance for your driver-guide to set the scene: the kings of Munster, the church that followed them, and how the Rock fits into the wider story of Ireland. If you would rather spend longer at Cashel and less time elsewhere, or add a stop along the way, just ask. Because the tour is private, the timings follow your priorities rather than a fixed schedule.

We enjoyed a 10 day trip to Ireland with a private driver (Jimmy) for 8 of the days. Having a driver made the trip quite relaxing and was well worth the expense. He shared a wealth of knowledge and the pride he felt towards his country was evident. Many laughs were shared as we explored the beautiful Irish countryside. He kept us busy with a wide variety of suggestions and time passed too quickly; we greatly enjoyed our trip and the time spent with Jimmy. We hope to come back again and explore more of this beautiful country.

Just returned from my first tour of Ireland with Lloyd Creagh as our driver and guide through the Emerald Isle. Lloyd welcomed us with a big smile and made everyone feel comfortable and welcome. The tour bus was comfortable and ready for our daily adventure. He shared his expansive knowledge of the country and Irish history, sang for us, told jokes, and personal stories along the route. Lloyd made all 13 of us feel safe and went the extra step to ensure that each of us would take home special memories from Ireland. His recommendations for shopping, place to visit and where to eat were on point! His sense of humor, positive attitude, and infectious laugh added another layer altogether to the trip. Such a amazing trip; will most defiantly be back for more Ireland with Lloyd Creagh

Creagh Travel was the BEST decision we made for our Ireland trip! We had an “ambitious” itinerary for touring Dublin, Cliffs of Moher, Cork, Kinsale, and more in a week. Our driver, James (Jimmy) made it all possible and added so much to every mile of our trip - special detours and added sights to see, helping us maximize our experience. Honestly, the side trips he recommended ended up being our favorite parts of the trip. 5 extra shiny stars for Jimmy and Creagh for making our experience smooth, stress-free, fun and so much more memorable. We Jimmy’d our plan! We will call Creagh Travel first before our next visit to Ireland 🤩🍀🗺️💚

This has been by far my favorite part of our Ireland trip, and Lloyd helped make to make this one we won't soon forget. We took a two day tour from Killarney to Dingle and back. We couldn't have asked for a better way to travel. From start to finish service was top notch. I personally loved the history telling and joke swapping. Thank you Lloyd! See ya next trip!

Hands down my favorite tour company I have ever used in Ireland. We come to Ireland every couple years and have used other companies in the past. A friend referred them to me this time and it was the most personal experience. From start to finish he made us feel like we were royalty. Highly recommended!

Lloyd was the best! We had a 13 person 5 day tour throughout Ireland with 4 young children that included a long trek from Dublin to County Mayo to see our family. Lloyd was so knowledgeable and fun! His recommendations were great, especially for the kids. We already want to return to Ireland and will be sure to book with Lloyd!

Five stars for Lloyd! He drove our 13-person family crew around Ireland for five days and he was the best. From the start he helped us figure out the exact right bus size we needed. We also had an unconventional route across Western Ireland, but Lloyd rolled with it and suggested great spots along the way, including a sheepdog demonstration that the kids loved. He kept the mood light with jokes over the mic while he drove and also gave us historical context. Plus his restaurant recs in Dublin, Westport, and Galway were excellent. If you’re heading to Ireland and are looking for an attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable driver/guide, you need to use Lloyd!
